It is inevitable that however good a game Paradox II is, some people somewhere will not be able to run it, for whatever reason. Here is a list of known bugs which we hope may help those who cannot run the game.
Q) When I try to run the game, it says I am missing some necessary
DLLs. What should I do?
A) We deliberately did not distribute all the necessary DLLs with
Paradox II because most users will already have the required files on
their computer. This problem only really occurs if you have an obsolete
version of DirectX installed. To get the latest version, visit the
Microsoft DirectX page at
www.microsoft.com/directx/
and follow the links to the download centre, where you can download the
latest version of DirectX (about 6MB).
Q) The game starts up but when it gets to the menu screen it crashes.
What have I done wrong?
A) Nothing. The game needs 2MB of VRAM available to DirectDraw to run. To
check whether you have enough, go into the DirectX tab in Control Panel,
click on DirectDraw and look at the line which says "Memory Available to
DirectDraw." If it's too low, you may need to consider buying a more
up-to-date graphics card. These days, you should be aiming for 8MB of
VRAM minimum when running games, and preferably 16MB or even 32MB (such
as that offered by the Millenium G400). Personally I like the Voodoo 3
3000 (3Dfx Interactive), though they have recently released a 3500
version which you should probably go for if buying first-hand. If buying
a new card is a bit beyond your budget, you could try changing the screen
mode in Windows down to 640x480x256 when running the game. This will fix
the problem on some computers, although the speed of the game may be
less than optimal.
